DAN Training & Education
Instructor Qualification Course (IQC)
DAN´s Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries Provider Course was designed to fill the void in oxygen first aid training available for the general diving public.                                                                                                   This course represents entry level training designed to educate the general diving (and qualified non-diving) public in recognizing possible dive related injuries and providing emergency oxygen first aid while activating the local emergency medical services (EMS) and/or arranging for evacuation to the nearest available medical facility.

In DAN´s most recent dive accident record, less than 33% of injured divers received emergency oxygen in the field. Few of those received oxygen concentrations approaching the recommended 100%. DAN and all major diving instructional agencies recommend that all divers be qualified to provide 100% oxygen in the field to those injured in a dive accident.

The IQC follows a modular format. There is a Core Module and then a separate module representing each training program. You can take all nine modules as part of one course, or just take the Core Module and one course module - whatever you are interested in teaching. Later, as long as you remain a current and active DAN Instructor, you can take additional modules without retaking the Core Module. The Core Module is now available online.

Prerequisites for DAN Instructor Qualification Course: approx. four hours

  • DAN Member
  • Current Provider training within 24 months in all courses seeking instructor certification
  • Active scuba diving educator*
  • Current CPR Instructor
  • Documentation of First Aid training

-Students must complete the Core Module on-line and bring a copy of the completion certificate to class.

-Registration Fee does not include Course materials. Please check the appropriate box whether you prefer Std. or Digital series.

-Note: Pre-registration is mandatory. You will be notified of the time and location of class upon confirmation of registration.

-This class requires a minimum of four (4) and a maximum of six (6) participants

More people are diving with enriched air and this means the demand for enriched air fills is also increasing. However, there needs to be someone qualified to administer these fills to meet this demand. This is where the DSAT Gas Blender course comes in. It can result in one of two certifications: DSAT Gas Blender or DSAT Trimix Blender.

What do I need to start?

·         PADI Enriched Air Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)

·        Minimum age: 18 years old

            What will I do?

·         The DSAT Gas Blender course will train you as a qualified gas blender, allowing you to provide gas mixes to appropriately certified consumers. You'll learn the physical properties of oxygen, its associated hazards, handling requirements and what cleaning equipment is necessary. Finally, you will learn the five methods of obtaining the desired enriched air Nitrox mix and the various methods used to obtain proper helium mixes.

            What will I need?

*      DSAT Gas Blender Manual (read prior to course date)

*      Gas Mix Calculator (included in course)

*      You must bring four (4) 0xygen cleaned scuba tanks ready for filling with Nitrox, and/or let Instructor know if unable to provide 4 - 02 clean tanks.

*      PLUS bring one additional piece of scuba equipment that you will 0xygen clean during this course, IE: one tank (any size) with valve (both count as one item & you will 02 clean both) OR one regulator: 1st stage, 2nd stage, and octopus (Reg set counts as one item and you will 02 clean all during course).

*      Pass written exam with a minimum mark of 80%

HEART & STROKE FOUNDATION’S: CPR PLUS AED COURSE (Level C – CPR Card with Heart & Stroke): $ 170 pp + GST , includes course materials, Sunday, April 23rd, (6 hours): 8 am – 11am, break for AUC’s AGM & Lunch, continues 1- 4 pm,   Heart & Stroke Instructor: KEN HOLLIDAY of Northwest Scuba/Edmonton) –Course Location: Divescapes – Best Western Sherwood Hotel & Conference Centre, Room - TBA

CPR: Sixty seconds—the time it takes to wash your hands, or brush your teeth, or put the cream in your coffee—is all it takes to save someone’s life. A mere minute can mean the difference between living and dying for someone experiencing cardiac arrest. Making that difference depends on all of us. By knowing how to respond to a cardiac arrest, a person’s odds of survival and recovery may increase by 30 percent or more. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)—a technique involving chest compressions and artificial respiration—has the power to restore blood flow in those suffering cardiac arrest , keeping them alive until an ambulance arrives on the scene.

AED: Learn to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). By using Defibrillation, there is a 30%, or better survival rate. This skill is a life-saving act. Now, you don’t have to be a doctor to save a life. New automated external defibrillators (AEDs) make it possible for even non-medical personnel to restore heart rhythm—and life.

The ALBERTA UNDERWATER COUNCIL, using gaming/lottery funds provided by their hard-working casino & bingo volunteers have purchased 2 AED’s – one located in Edmonton and one in Calgary.

Join this combo course to learn or refresh your CPR skills (which need to be renewed every 2-3 years) and also to learn to use the new AED’s.

Note: need a minimum of 4 participants, maximum of 8.  Cancellation Policy: Full refunds provided if course is cancelled, but a $60 no show fee will be charged, with balance then refunded if you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice.                                                                                                                                                         Payment to be made to the Alberta Underwater Council by cheque, Visa, MasterCard.
