Our Discover Scuba Program is designed for teachers & school groups - especially in out-lying areas in the province as an introductory session to the rapidly growing activity of Scuba Diving. Students will learn the basic techniques of Scuba Diving and then will have hands on experience diving in a pool. This exciting program has been used to enrich the physical education program curriculum in schools for over 16 years.

Discover Scuba Program - Youth Outreach

The Council delivers an introductory Discover Scuba outreach program to Alberta schools, youth groups and pool facilities in rural Alberta upon request at a nominal (cost recovery) fee. All equipment and an experienced instructor are provided

AND/OR teachers/groups/local recreational facilities are encouraged to contact the Alberta dive store facility nearest them (see "Resources", then click on Dive Stores for their contact information, phone numbers and/or websites).  Please note the AUC does not teach Open Water Scuba Diver or Advanced Courses - please contact the nearest dive store or dive club in your area of the province.

Dive Alberta & Underwater Hockey Participants
The AUC promotes diving in Alberta by sanctioning and providing support for events held by affiliated clubs around Alberta. Each time an AUC member enters 2 or more events they become eligible for a prize draw (usually a $250 Gift Certificate from an Alberta Dive Centre of their choosing) at the end of the year.

The AUC promotes underwater hockey by sanctioning and providing support for clubs and tournaments hosted by affiliated clubs around Alberta.  Each time an AUC member enters 2 or more sanctioned events they become eligible for a prize draw (usually a $250 Gift Certificate from an Alberta Dive Centre of their choosing) at the end of the year.

Bingo & Casino
Edmonton hold bingos that generate revenue for the AUC that is used to fund our programs and club projects. The monies received from each bingo are divided among the participating clubs based on the number of volunteers from each club. The AUC retains a portion of the bingo revenue to offset operating costs. Clubs receive quarterly reports on their fund status. The AUC must follow the Alberta Gaming Commission guidelines on how the money can be spent to ensure the continuation of these funds for future use. For example, some clubs decide to use their credits to pay for pool rental or travel to competitions (underwater hockey) or purchase equipment  - note Gaming guidelines encourages at least 50% of Gaming proceeds are to be spent on "Youth & Youth Programs".

All members who are participating at AUC sanctioned dive events are covered by sport accident insurance during the events.  All AUC members receive reduced participation rates at most "Dive Alberta" events.  Your membership is important to us in our dialogue with government, parks, etc with issues about access for divers which come up from time to time.

Underwater Alberta Newsletters are produced Spring, Summer & Fall/Winter Editions. The publications update and inform members of all activities of the Council. They try to provide current technical and safety information plus news of the members, clubs & supporters affiliated with the AUC.  An eMail Bulletin goes out to a data base of interested members with news & reminders of upcoming events, happenings, store news, etc.

Safety
The AUC is developing a Public Service Announcement video for airing throughout Alberta and Canada. The video's aim is to educate divers and boaters about the importance of recognizing and understanding the meaning of the Diver Down flag. In addition to this, the AUC puts up dive flag awareness signs at docks, marinas, lakes and other dive sites to make the public aware that divers use the local waters.

AUC event volunteers (Divemaster or Instructor level) are encouraged to apply for insurance coverage within the AUC Liability Program at no cost in appreciation of their volunteer assistance at events. Please contact the AUC office for more details.
